This resource is general information and is not legal advice. The right approach depends on the facts, documents, and law applicable to a particular matter.

Life changes first

Marriage, divorce, births, deaths, incapacity, relocation, and changes in family relationships are common reasons to revisit wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and beneficiary designations.

Then review the assets

A plan can become outdated simply because the balance sheet changed. New businesses, real estate, retirement accounts, insurance, concentrated investments, or inherited assets may require different planning or titling.

Confirm the people

Reconsider executors, trustees, agents, guardians, and health-care decision makers. The person who was appropriate five years ago may no longer be the best choice today.
